Cecil B. DeMille fóu format seriosament dins el món cinematogràfic en una associació de cinema l’any 1913 conjuntament amb l’artista de vaudeville Jesse L. Lasky i l’home de negocis Samuel Goldfish (que ben aviat va ser conegut com Samuel Goldwyn). La seva primera aventura com a director, productor i guionista fóu al film The Squaw Man (1914), que DeMille va co·dirigir, co-escriure i co-produir amb Oscar Apfel. El seu primer treball en solitari va ser el Western The Virginian (1914). Va escriure i editar (o co·escriure) gairebé totes les seves pel·lícules d’èxit, amb la notable excepció del popular melodrama The Cheat (1915). L’escriptor Jeanie MacPherson va començar a treballar per a DeMille a l’any 1914 amb el film The Captive (1915), i va escriure també més tard la majoria de les seves pel·lícules mudes les quals ja induïen a un estil propi molt relacionat amb la moral cristiana; contes d’èpica moral que combinaven amb visions modernes dels drames relacionats amb la historia com a la pel·lícula Joan the woman (1916) o de la Bíblica Els deu manaments (1923); DeMille també va realitzar segurament el seu major èxit artístic dins el cinema mut, la bonica i conmovedora vida de Jesucrist, The King of Kings (1927). MacPherson també va escriure juntament amb el director els seus tres primers films de l’era sonora, finalitzant l’any 1930 la seva col·laboració amb la estranya comèdia Madam Satan (1930). DeMille segueix realitzant grans films durant la dècada dels ‘30s amb epopeies com The sign of the Cross (1932), Cleopatra (1934) i el western The Plainsman (1937), Unión Pacífic (1939). Però la seva carrera no havia acabat pas; Durant els ‘40s va realitzar alguns films poder no tant espectaculars i amb menys acollida per part del gran públic amb alguns films d’acció com Noth West Mounted Police (1940) i Reap Wild Wind (1942). Les tres últimes pel·lícules de DeMille van ser: Samsó i Dalila (1950), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), i The ten Commandments (1956), un remake de la seva pel·lícula del 1923 del mateix títol; aquestes van ser les més exitoses versions dels seus respectius Anys. L’últim esforç de DeMille com a director, The Ten Commandments també va ser la campiona de taquilla durant aquella dècada. Va Morir l’any 1959 a la edat de 77 anys, les seves memòries, La Autobiografia de Cecil B. DeMille, es van publicar pòstumament un any més tard de la seva mort.
